Celebs working towards mental health

This is a space to acknowledge celebrities who are fighting towards stigmas associated with mental health and combating ways to make mental health a less frequent issue.

Glenn Close

Bring Change to Mind was started in 2010 by award-winning actress and activist Glenn Close after her sister Jessie Close was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in 2010. Bring Change to Mind is a non-profit looking to raise awareness and break stigmas against mental health. Glenn Close, herself, has revealed in the past about her own personal struggles with depression. Close has also talked on college campuses to students in order to expose mental health struggles that they may experience in their early adulthood.

The vision of Bring Change to Mind is to create multimedia campaigns, curate storytelling movements, and develop youth programs to encourage a diverse cultural conversation around mental health.

Bring Change to Mind’s guiding principles & beliefs are as followed:

  • Start the conversation
  • Amplify voices
  • Be an ally
  • Empower the future
  • Support science
  • Fight for human rights

Heads Together Campaign

The Heads Together Campaign initiated by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex got started after he spoke to a therapist about his mental health after 2 years of ‘total chaos’ in his late 20s. Prince Harry had a hard time coping with his own feelings years after his mother, Princess Diana’s death amongst other personal circumstances as he became an adult.

This organization caters to all my audience and viewers who reside in the United Kingdom. The Royals have a platform for you!!! Please seek help when you feel you need assistance. You are NOT alone.

Heads Together is a mental health initiative spearheaded by The Royal Foundation of The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke & Duchess of Sussex, which combines a campaign to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health with fundraising for a series of innovative, new mental health services.

The goal of Heads Together Campaign is to ensure that people feel comfortable with their everyday mental well-being, feel able to support their friends and families through difficult times, and that stigma no longer prevents people getting the help they need.

Programs that they offer are as followed:

  • Workplace well-being
  • Mentally Healthy Schools
  • Armed Forces Community
  • Mental Health Innovations
  • Supporting Maternal Mental Health

Taraji P. Henson, a famous actress, known for her roles in many movies and TV series such as Baby Boy, Hustle & Flow, Think Like a Man, Hidden Figures, Empire, etc., continues to be an influential role model in the African American community and around the world.

In 2018, Taraji founded The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation in honor of her father, a Vietnam War Veteran, who suffered with mental health challenges as a result of his tour of duty.  The goal of the foundation is to change the perception of mental illness in the African-American community by encouraging people to get the help they need.  On June 7-9, 2019, Taraji held a successful conference and benefit dinner in Washington, DC that I still hear references of on my SiriusXM channels when they discuss celebs associated with philanthropy until this day.  The foundation ensures cultural competency in caring for African Americans who struggle from mental illness through scholarships and offering mental health services.  To visit her foundation’s site or to donate to the organization, please visit https://borislhensonfoundation.org .  Congratulations on all the work you do to improve mental health within our community!
